The newly Chairman of the Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, Sir Chidi Dike, has revealed his disappointment over the recent resignation from the party, of one of their leaders and founding member of the party, former Deputy Speaker of the Nigerian National Assembly, Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha.
MaaziTV has it that the political landscape in Imo State underwent a significant shift, as the one-time Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, formally tendered his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday.
Ihedioha, citing differences between his personal beliefs and the direction the party was current moving, parted ways with a political party he helped build.
Ihedioha’s resignation was followed by more resignations from the party, as many party officials and chieftains also tendered their resignations from the party.
In his reaction to the development, Dike stated that it was unfortunate that a leader of Ihedioha’s calibre would leave the party.
“It is unfortunate that a leader of his calibre resigned from the party, being one of the founding fathers and funders.”
Dike likened the situation to “a rotating fan,” pointing out the inevitable changes in political dynamics.
Despite Ihedioha’s departure, Dike however remained optimistic that the party would grow.
“Everyone has the right in life to make any decision at any time. Since he has decided to move, no problem, but I assure him that as he has resigned, more than 2,000 politicians will come into the party within the shortest possible time,” Dike stated.
Ihedioha, in his letter of resignation, which he addressed to the Chairman of the PDP in his Mbutu Ward in Mbaise Local Government Area, outlined his longstanding commitment and contributions to the party since it’s formation in 1998.
He expressed his deep regrets over recent developments in the PDP, pointing out that, “Regrettably, in recent times, the party has taken on a path that is at variance with my personal beliefs.
“Despite my attempt to offer counsel, the party is sadly no longer able to carry out internal reforms, enforce its own rules, or offer credible opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress.”
Ihedioha went on to reveal that his decision to resign from the party was difficult but necessary.
He however reaffirmed his dedication towards making contributions toward the enhancement of democracy and governance in Nigeria.
