In a landmark development, the women of Imo State have grabbed headlines by stepping down from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
On Thursday, April 25, 2024, a diverse group of women from the Owerri Zone, operating within the political pressure group “Imo Women On The Move,” officially relinquished their status as card-carrying members of the PDP.
Their collective resignation followed the recent departure of the former Governor of Imo State, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, along with his supporters and followers.
During a pivotal meeting in Owerri, the group’s President, Hon. Chief Mrs. Ann Njoku, addressed the media, expressing contentment with Ihedioha’s decision to leave the PDP.
“As women of substance who value leadership and good governance, we once believed in the PDP. However, the current atmosphere within the party is tainted by impunity, intimidation, and authoritarianism from certain national leaders. Since they have opted to undermine the party, we have collectively chosen to align with our leader, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha,” Mrs. Njoku remarked.
The group’s Secretary, Hon. Mrs. Gertrude Iroeme, echoed these sentiments, underscoring their allegiance to Ihedioha.
She affirmed that the “Imo Women On The Move” would persist in backing Ihedioha, whom she lauded as an outstanding leader.
“Wherever Ihedioha goes, we will follow because he exemplifies exceptional leadership. As we approach the next Imo Governorship Elections, we will wholeheartedly and decisively support him. We are confident that the Imo PDP is irreversibly defunct, and with Ihedioha’s political movement, we will continue to regard him as our political stalwart and mentor,” Mrs. Iroeme declared.
The women in attendance at the meeting expressed satisfaction with their resolution to part ways with the PDP.
They pledged unwavering support to Ihedioha until he affiliates with another political party, showcasing their steadfast loyalty to his leadership and aspirations.
The exit of “Imo Women On The Move” from the PDP signals a significant transformation in Imo State’s political dynamics and highlights the potential influence of Ihedioha in shaping the state’s political future, particularly in the forthcoming Imo Governorship Elections in 2027.
