Amidst the recent developments surrounding former PDP governorship candidate Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha in Imo State, discussions have already begun regarding his and other members’ next political moves. While Ihedioha has yet to disclose his future plans following his resignation, speculation is rife about where he and his supporters will align themselves politically.
This week witnessed a significant exodus from the Imo PDP, with Ihedioha playing a leading role in the departure. Over two thousand leaders from various levels of the party hierarchy, including ward, state, and local government, have resigned, signaling the possibility of a fresh political direction.
Sources within Ihedioha’s camp suggest that the Labour Party may be the next destination, although considerations are also being given to parties such as APGA and a proposed mega party. Although direct confirmation from Ihedioha was not obtained, indications from his camp suggest a desire to strategically plan for a political comeback following his removal from Government House, Owerri, by the Supreme Court in 2020.
It is believed that those who left the PDP in solidarity with Ihedioha are seriously considering joining the Labour Party, with plans underway to strengthen the party’s presence in Imo State in preparation for the 2027 elections. With Labour Party gaining momentum in Abia State under Governor Alex Otti and the influence of figures like Peter Obi, joining LP could significantly bolster Ihedioha’s political resurgence in Imo.
Alternatively, Ihedioha’s camp is also exploring the option of aligning with APGA, as evidenced by recent interactions between party officials and Ihedioha at his Mbutu Aboh Mbaise country home. Although no formal commitment has been made, there appears to be a growing affinity between Ihedioha and APGA, particularly given the party’s recent successes in Anambra State under Governor Prof Soludo.
Furthermore, there is speculation about the formation of a mega party before the 2027 elections, with figures like Ihedioha potentially playing a pivotal role in its establishment. If such a party materializes, it could provide a platform for Ihedioha and his supporters to pursue their political objectives on a national scale.
