Former Governor of Imo State, Emeka Ihedioha, provided insights into his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), revealing a significant conversation he had with the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, before officially submitting his resignation. In an interview on Arise Television, Ihedioha disclosed the details of his discussion with Atiku, stating, “Prior to sending in my letter, I engaged in a dialogue with Atiku Abubakar, during which he advised me to hold off on my decision to leave the party. However, despite his suggestion, I ultimately deemed it necessary to proceed with my resignation.”
While Ihedioha clarified that Atiku did not explicitly endorse his departure from the party, the former governor emphasized that Atiku urged him to delay his decision to allow for further discussion. “Although Atiku’s stance did not align with my choice to exit the party, his counsel prompted me to reflect on my position,” Ihedioha remarked during the interview. He continued, “After careful consideration, I came to the conclusion that prolonging my stay within the party would serve no purpose.”
The interaction with Atiku Abubakar was just one aspect of Ihedioha’s decision-making process regarding his party affiliation. Ihedioha further elaborated on his reasoning for leaving the PDP, citing a desire for a more aligned political trajectory and a need for clarity on his political future. “While Atiku’s advice was valued, I ultimately had to prioritize my own convictions and aspirations,” Ihedioha stated. “The decision to part ways with the PDP was not made lightly but was a culmination of careful deliberation and reflection on my political journey.”
Ihedioha’s departure from the PDP marks a significant shift in the political landscape, prompting discussions about the state of the party in Imo and its future direction.
