As Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State nears the end of his tenure in 2027, political observers and residents alike are turning their attention to potential successors.
The race to Douglas House promises to be a fiercely contested one, with several prominent political figures positioning themselves for the gubernatorial seat.
Here are some of the most likely faces that may seek to take over from Governor Uzodimma:
1. Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha
Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha, a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, is a well-known political figure in Imo State. Ihedioha briefly served as the Governor of Imo State before a Supreme Court judgment annulled his election. His tenure, though short-lived, was marked by significant infrastructural developments and policy initiatives aimed at improving the state’s governance. Ihedioha’s strong political network and his perceived commitment to good governance make him a formidable contender.
Ihedioha recently dumped the Peoples Democratic Party PDP and has yet to reveal the political platform he would be emerging from though there are strong indications that he might emerge from Labour Party.
2. Dr. Ikedi Ohakim
Dr. Ikedi Ohakim, another former Governor of Imo State, remains a significant player in the state’s political landscape. Serving as governor from 2007 to 2011, Ohakim is remembered for his environmental initiatives and efforts to improve the state’s infrastructure. Ohakim is currently seeking to complete the remaining half of his constitutionally allowed eight years after he was erroneously removed from office after serving only four years.
3. Senator Samuel Anyanwu (SamDaddy)
Senator Samuel Anyanwu, popularly known as SamDaddy, has built a robust political profile through his service as a senator representing Imo East. Known for his legislative acumen and grassroots appeal, Anyanwu was the candidate of the PDP in the last election and is currently in court seeking to unseat Uzodinma. Should he fail to remove Uzodinma through the courts, there is a great chance that he may yet again contest for the seat of power come 2027.
4. Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi
Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi, representing Imo East in the Senate, is another key figure eyeing the governorship. Onyewuchi recently jumped into the All Progressives Congress APC, a move believed to have been made in hopes of getting Uzodimma’s blessings to emerge as his successor. Onyewuchi has been known as the lucky politician who has always made the right political moves to emerge winner during election despite being regarded as an under achiever. Onyewuchi probably hopes his “magic wand” would work again in his favour. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and watch.
5. Deacon Chike Okafor
Deacon Chike Okafor, a former Commissioner for Finance in Imo State and current member of the House of Representatives, is another person expected to fight for the seat of power come 2027. The self-styled Church Deacon is famous for partnering with former governor Rochas Okorocha during his eight years of misrule in the state. Okafor however jumped shipped to back Uzodinma when he saw where the wind was blowing, thereby betraying his political mentor. Known for playing very unChristian politics, whether Uzodinma would trust Okafor well enough to bless him as a successor is left to be seen.
6. Rt Hon Henry Nwawuba
Rt Hon Henry Nwawuba, has been hinted as having his eyes set on leading the state. Nwawuba served as a member of the House of Representatives representing Mbaitoli and Ikeduru and made significant contributions to legislative processes and constituency development. Nwawuba’s commitment to infrastructure development and social welfare programs has earned him a loyal following, enhancing his prospects in the gubernatorial race. But he’ll need a lot more backing to secure the ticket of the party.
7. Jerry Chukwueke
Viewed as a joker in every race he ever declared interest in, Jerry Chukwueke, a businessman and politician, is another person with his eyes set on governing Imo. However he doesn’t have any real pedigree to back his claims of having the capacity to lead the state and is believed that he might be another Rochas Okorocha in the making.
8. Jude Ejiogu
Jude Ejiogu, a former Secretary to the Imo State Government, brings a wealth of administrative experience to the table. Ejiogu’s time in both the private sector as well as in public service has been marked by efforts to enhance governance efficiency and public sector reform. His deep understanding of the state’s administrative machinery positions him as a capable contender for the governorship.
There are still the likes Prince Alex Mbata onye PAM PAM PAM amongst others who are expected to declare their interest for the seat.
Some have secretly started setting up structures.
Conclusion
The upcoming gubernatorial election in Imo State promises to be a hotly contested affair, with a diverse array of candidates bringing different strengths and visions to the race. As the political landscape continues to evolve, these potential candidates will undoubtedly play pivotal roles in shaping the future of Imo State. Ndi Imo will be keenly watching their campaigns and platforms to decide who will best lead the state into a new era of growth and development.
